Sam and Jessie were two dogs I loved. I
adopted Sam, and a local business near my house cared for
Jessie, who adopted me.
This past April,
Sam became sick and was taken to the vet. We found out that
someone had fed Sam a "stew" with onions, rawhide and antifreeze
in it. Antifreeze can smell and taste sweet to pets, but it is
poisonous. The vet told us that Sam would not recover. After saying good-bye to Sam, we returned
home and found that Jessie was sick from the antifreeze, too.
I wanted
to know more about the antifreeze that someone used to take the
lives of my dogs. They suffered so much and I couldn't believe
something so deadly was just sold at nearly every store.
I learned
about the bittering agent denatonium benzoate, and that when
added to antifreeze it made it taste bad. I found out that five
states already had laws that required
this bittering agent be added to antifreeze. In one state, it's called Scooby's
Law. It was named for a golden retriever that had suffered the
same death as Sam and Jessie.
If this law was in every state, Sam and Jessie most likely would
still be here with me.
I wanted a
law like that to be passed in Tennessee. I wrote letters to many
members of the state legislature. State Senator Raymond Finney agreed to
help. I believe he wants this bill passed as much as I do!
