Amber Ginter

Kingston, Ohio

Amber Ginter is on a mission to help animals. She completed all five of our Mission: Humane projects!

The Shoot to Save Wildlife project teaches people how to get along with wild animals in their community. Amber decided to do her project about coyotes. "I researched coyotes because they sounded like an interesting animal to learn about, and to show that I care about all types of animals," she says.

For the project, she wrote this letter about coyotes to her local newspaper:

There may be a problem in Ohio with wild animals, but that does not mean that we need to hurt them. There are many coyotes in our area, and they are killing deer and some people's pets.

One way we can protect pets is to not leave pet food and water bowls outside. They attract coyotes to come near your house.

We can also keep our garbage in a sturdy container, with a tight fitting lid. And don't place trash cans at the curb until the morning of your pick up day. Keep your compost in enclosed bins, and clean up around bird feeders. Watch small dogs while outside, even during daylight hours. [It's best to walk dogs on a leash.] Keep cats indoors. If we do those simple things, fewer coyotes will come near our homes.

As for coyotes killing deer, that is their nature. Even though it makes me sad, it is how they get food. So next time you see a coyote, do not hurt him. That goes for any animal as well. We need animals in our world.

You can help wild animals in your community too. Do the Shoot to Save Wildlife project—we'll send you a disposable camera as a reward!
