Critter Card Cutouts

As part of the California Turn In Poachers (Cal-TIP) program, these K-9s are helping sniff out crimes against wildlife.

Rusty
When master K-9 trainer Chip Johnson visited the Marin Humane Society with his daughter Oakley, 5, she pointed at Rusty and said, "Test this one!" When he did, he knew that Oakley had picked a winner. Rusty's boundless energy means he doesn't stop until his job is done. So far, he's sniffed out illegally killed deer and a bear. Warden Erick Elliott is Rusty's partner. At the end of a long day, he says, Rusty is only disappointed that his work is over!

Katie
Warden D.J. Powell and his wife brought Katie home when she was "no bigger than a baked potato." Once she was fully grown, Powell decided to see if she could join the K-9 program. Katie passed the tests with flying colors. She goes to work with Powell every day, in search of illegally hunted mussels, trout, deer, bear, and elk. "Katie not only is my working partner," says Powell. "She's a beloved member of our family."

Jin
Jin was in and out of animal shelters during the first year of her life. When she went to live with Lieutenant Lynette Shimek, Jin was sick, stressed out, and had no manners. She was eager to please though, so Shimek started working with her. "She was a wreck at first," Shimek tells us, "but now she is calm, relaxed, happy, and ready to greet the world." After one-on-one training with Shimek, Jin is now a K-9 officer—proof that shelter dogs deserve a second chance.
