In 1974, movie fans were treated to a new kind of hero. He wore no cape—and carried no weapon—but managed to rescue two kidnapped kids.
He couldn’t speak, but this scruffy dog was as clever as they come. His name was Benji (real name: Higgins), and audiences were in love.
Joe Camp is the creator of all the Benji movies. He discovered his lovable star in a California animal shelter 30 years ago. KIND News
caught up with Camp to ask about his newest movie— Benji Off the Leash—and its lead performer.
KIND News: Does the new Benji like show biz?
Joe Camp: She’d never been out of Mississippi before, but she loves New York—the crowds and studios. It’s as if she’s been a star for years!
KN: Where else have you two traveled?
JC: We went to Washington, D.C., to talk to Congress about animal-related issues. She and I also went to Denver to promote a United States Postal Service stamp. The stamp reminds people to spay and neuter their pets.
KN: You’ve been referring to Benji as “she.” This Benji is a girl?
JC: Yes. As soon as I saw her face, I knew she would be Benji—boy or girl! Besides being cute, she’s very bright. She learns quickly and doesn’t forget.
KN: Is it true you found her in an animal shelter?
JC: It sure is—just like the first Benji. Shelters are great places to find animal actors, and they’re the best places to find new pets.
KN: Tell us about Benji’s Buddies.
JC: Pets in shelters who have been trained, socialized, and given health checkups are Benji’s Buddies. Instead of people going to pet stores, we want them to think, “No, I’m going to adopt one of Benji’s Buddies.” Part of the money Benji Off the Leash makes will go to animal shelters around the country.
