Pennies Help Pets

Talk about being a long-time friend to animals! The Wake Robin KIND Club in Bellevue, Nebraska, was formed 15 years ago! Every year, second- and third-graders think of ways to help animals. Their most recent project was called Pennies and Toys for the Precious.

Club members learned about Animeals, a program of the Nebraska Humane Society. Animeals delivers pet food to senior citizens who have a hard time afford the food for their pets. Club members learned how important pets are to senior citizens. Their pets provide them with companionship and comfort. The kids decided to hold a penny drive to help Animeals.

But wait! While they were organizing the penny drive, the kids heard from staff at the Nebraska Humane Society. They had many cats at the shelter who were waiting for their forever homes. And they were short on toys for the kitties to play with! The kids got to work. Not only would they hold a penny drive, but they would sponsor a toy collection too.

Hop to it!
To get the word out, club members made posters and posted information on their website. They got the entire school to help out. In the end, more than 300 toys were collected for the cats. And the penny drive raised a total of $340.29!

Mrs. Smith says her students learned about teamwork. "We were so excited and happy that our KIND Club and school were able to help," she says.

And, since their project qualifies as a Mission: Humane project, each kid received a Mission: Humane T-shirt as a reward!
